Global sports retail brand Decathlon is ramping up its eco-friendly efforts with the launch of its Solar Panels Sustainability Project in its Masinag branch in Antipolo City.
A joint effort between Decathlon Philippines, Inc. and Skye Renewables Philippines, Inc. through a Green Energy Option Program (GEOP) Supply Contract, the initiative is part of Decathlon’s global decarbonization strategy as it aims to achieve 100% use of renewable energy.
The solar panel rooftop consists of a 225.06 kWp system expected to generate >2.7GWh of renewable power over a 10-year contract period. This will cover 30% of the store’s yearly energy consumption with low-carbon, renewable energy source.
“In Decathlon, we aim to advocate sustainability in our daily practices to positively impact our playground. It is our pleasure to partner with Skye Renewables that shares the same commitment as us,” said Decathlon Philippines president Hans Iff.
Meanwhile, Decathlon Philippines sustainability leader JP Oracion said that the Masinag branch is their first on-site renewable energy source in the country.
“We are convinced that we will accelerate our actions, not just on renewable energy but the whole Sustainability Project of the country,” he said.
Other sustainability efforts of Decathlon Philippines include its Buy Back and Second Life circularity model where the brand buys back old Decathlon purchases from customers and gives the products a second life, sold at a cheaper price.
