Some of the country’s highly recognized creatives in music, literature, ballet, and stage production are all set to gather for the upcoming world premiere of ‘Florante at Laura‘ hosted by Ballet Manila.
Scheduled for October 12, 13, and 19 at the Aliw Theater, the grand production comes after Ballet Manila’s successful run of the ‘Ibong Adarna.’
Ballet Manila creative director Lisa Macuja Elizalde shared that the production for Florante at Laura, set to be Gerardo Francisco’s next big project, was planned before the pandemic.
Francisco is a longtime principal dance and co-artistic associate at Ballet Manila who’s working with British choreographer Martin Lawrence for Florante at Laura, the choreographer of the dance company’s Filipino adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliet.’
Joining the two in the production is Filipino music pillar Ryan Cayabyab who’s working on song compositions for the ballet with his son, Toma Cayabyab.
Other creatives involved in Florante at Laura production include Mio Infante for the set design, Otto Hernandez and Therese Arroyo for the costumes, and John Batalla for the lighting.

Written in 1830 by Filipino poet Francisco ‘Balagtas’ Baltasar, Florante at Laura is a literary masterpiece that follows the story of Florante, a duke who was held captive and enslaved by the Turks. But with the help of Aladin, he managed to escape from his captors to return to his country, Albania, to face off the usurper Count Adolfo, seek redemption, and reunite with his beloved Laura.
