“When we say Emergency, we always think that it’s a matter of life and death, a situation that needs an immediate risk to health, life or property, or a situation that requires urgent rescue to prevent worsening of a situation and to save lives.”
At this point, we call Emergency 911, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) and Paramedics who respond to our emergency calls and cases. They are the ones who are hired on pre-hospital emergencies and the ones that you find in ambulances.
To explain EMT further, their expertise is on pre hospital emergency care. They are trained to respond quickly to emergency situations on accident scenes, to cater to medical injuries and transport patients to hospital for medical care.
Asia’s Emergency Medical Services Institute, Inc. (AEMS) provides EMS training for EMT’s. They are the first non-government Emergency Medical Services (EMS) education and training center in Mindanao.
(AEMS) is a non-profit organization that aims to teach the right knowledge, skills and attitudes to practice competently the art and science of pre-hospital emergency care.
AEMS is based in Davao City and was legally registered in 18th of June of 203 with Securities and Exchange Commission under Company Registration No. CN201329902.
They also provide the best training in the region with the aim of providing Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) access to a higher educational system through its 4 Levels of EMS Professionals for those who chose to make a career in this medical field.
AEMS intends to strengthen their mission objectives to create a “culture of education” that foster’s a long-term commitment to healthy outcomes and reduction of health related risks among their students / graduates and their patients. Second is to build a professional training and education center with tie-ups with local educational institutions and local government units in the Philippines.
The strength and advantage of AEMS is having Expat Paramedic instructors who are currently registered with and licensed by Health Professions Council of South Africa, a government registry in South Africa that handles the certification, registration and validation of healthcare professionals and paramedics. HPCSA provides the recognition of skills and qualification of a healthcare practitioner.
FAQ’s with Miss Imee Callao (President and Chairman of the Board)
Why did you choose Davao as the location for your training center?
One of the reasons AEMS was set up in Davao is because, Firstly, I am a Davaoena. I had my college degree from Ateneo de Davao University and we have the best EMS facility in the Philippines which is one of Davao’s pride – the Davao Central 911! Secondly, most emergencies and disasters are in the Visayas and in Mindanao i.e. Typhoon Yolanda in Tacloban, Typhoon Sendong in Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City, Typhoon Pablo in Davao Oriental.
It is also to make EMS courses accessible to students coming from the 6 regions of Mindanao. We have students coming from Cotabato City, Mati City (CDRRMO), Zamboanga City, General Santos City and even Iligan City. It will cost them more than Php 75,000.00 including air fare, board and lodging to go and study in Manila for an 8 week EMT course whereas if they go to AEMS, it will cost them half of that amount plus they get the value of having seasoned paramedics who have more than 20 years of experience in the EMS Field. Years of experience coupled with the knowledge of the latest protocols and procedures is what makes our instructors effective in their EMS Training
What courses do you offer?
· Emergency Medical Technician (Basic) with seven (7) Modules.
They are the Preparatory, Airway Management, Patient Management, Medical Emergencies, Trauma Emergencies, Infants and Children and Operations.
· Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
· Paramedic Degree Course, which AEMS is currently working on.
AEMS also offers the Lifeline membership under the Davao Lifeline Ambulance Rescue, Inc.
Whom are you affiliated with?
Ms. Imee: For local partnerships in line with providing quality EMS education, AEMS have collaborated with Lifeline Ambulance Rescue Inc. for Davao City and eventually will expand to Mindanao. We also have tie-ups with Kidapawan City’s Call 911 (CDRRMO) where our students go for their practical exposure. Call 911 is the EMS department of Kidapawan City Government and this is under the leadership of Hon. Mayor Joseph A. Evangelista who is very supportive when it comes to providing the best pre-hospital care for the residents of Kidapawan City. The EMS Chief of Call 911 is Mr. Psalmer Betralte who is also one of the board of directors for Red Cross Kidapawan City Chapter and Red Cross Cotabato City. AEMS is currently training Call 911 staff to an EMT-Level.
For international affiliations, AEMS is an accredited training center of SEAPHECC (Southeast Asia Pre-Hospital Emergency Care College), and the approved assessment center of AREMT (Australasia Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians) for Mindanao region. AEMS is also the approved training center of ASHI (American Safety and Health Institute) and ECSI (Emergency Care and Safety Institute) for short courses aimed at health care providers, non- healthcare providers and for the community and workplace.
One program we have is the AEMS EMS Community Program where we sponsored EMT training of rescue volunteers based in LGU’s or the Barangays to upgrade their skills from first responders to EMT Level. We hope that it will also help them find better employment opportunities in the future should they complete their training. The EMT scholarships is AEMS way of giving back to the community by making their first responders better skilled in pre-hospital emergency care and to be able to help save more lives. The first responders are part of the EMS system. Certification for first responders will have to come from TESDA as it is the government agency in the Philippines who is authorized to assess and certify first responders if they are competent or not. For EMT, AEMT and EMT-P (Paramedic) certification and registration, it will be under AREMT.
What are your future plans?
Ms. Imee: We plan to offer the Paramedic degree course in two to three years’ time. It is not possible at the moment because trainees need to complete EMT and Advance EMT (AEMT) courses and must have 1000 logged hours of actual cases under the AEMT level. AEMS will also be working on accrediting the Paramedic degree course with CHED and will be tying up the degree with an Australian University for international recognition. AEMS will be the very first to offer the Paramedic Degree course in the Philippines should everything proceed as scheduled.
When is the next EMT training?
Ms. Imee: The next batch of EMT training will be on January 2015. We will have students coming from Zamboanga City, Butuan City and General Santos City for this batch.
On March 2015, AEMS will launch its first Advanced AEMT Course. There are so many EMTs in the Philippines at the basic level. It’s about time, Filipino EMT’ level up to Advanced EMT.
AEMS will also be conducting the an emergency and disaster res
