Lessons from Raising Kids and Growing a Business

They say motherhood is the toughest yet the most rewarding job in the world. So it’s no surprise that mothers who are raising children while building a business are often seen as a different breed. Balancing both takes a rare combination of resilience, grit, and grace, as each role demands the same unwavering commitment, patience, and love to help something thrive.

The funny thing is, motherhood and entrepreneurship aren’t as different as they seem. As it turns out, the lessons that make someone a great parent often make them a better entrepreneur, too. Here’s what I’ve learned.

Progress beats perfection

Raising three kids has taught me one lesson that was once a hard pill to swallow: I’ll never be a perfect parent, because no one is. The best parents aren’t flawless; they’re the ones who keep showing up, learning, and doing better every day.

That same lesson has shaped how I run my business. Waiting for the perfect product, campaign, or strategy often means never launching at all. Progress comes from taking the first step, learning from what works and what doesn’t, and improving along the way.

Delegation is an act of trust, not surrender

For a hands-on mom like me, doing everything for my children felt natural. But over time, I realized that constantly stepping in didn’t always help them. I had to unlearn the habit of doing everything myself and trust that my kids were capable in their own ways. I learned that helping people grow sometimes means stepping back and giving them space to figure things out on their own.

Motherhood taught me the same lesson that applies to leading a business. Real growth happens when you trust the people around you. Whether it’s your team or your children, believing in their abilities and giving them the freedom to take ownership helps them become more confident, capable, and independent.

Celebrate the little wins

Being a mom has taught me to treasure the little victories. From hearing my children’s first words to watching them take their first steps, I’ve learned that growth is made up of moments that may seem small but mean everything.

I’ve carried that mindset into business. Every first matters – the first customer, the first sale, the first positive review, and every milestone that follows, because they’re what keep you moving forward.

Ask for help

One of the biggest lessons motherhood has taught me is that strength isn’t about carrying everything on your own. It’s about knowing who to lean on. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and I’m grateful every day for mine: my family who steps in when I need them, friends who listen without judgment, and fellow moms who just get it.
