In a time when environmental challenges continue to threaten our oceans, one community-driven initiative is proving that even the simplest acts can create lasting change. The “Our Seagrass: Sea of Life Project”, spearheaded by the Rotary Club of San Juan Del Monte (District 3800) under the leadership of Club President Shenna Jaye Quitoriano, is bringing renewed attention to the vital role of seagrass restoration in protecting marine ecosystems.

Restoring Life Beneath the Surface
Often overlooked, seagrass plays a crucial role in maintaining ocean health. These underwater plants serve as nurseries for marine life, provide food for species such as sea turtles and dugongs, and help stabilize the sea floor. More importantly, seagrass beds act as powerful carbon sinks, helping mitigate the effects of climate change.

Through the Sea of Life Project, volunteers and community members came together in Anilao, Batangas—one of the country’s most renowned marine biodiversity hotspots—to actively plant seagrass and restore damaged coastal habitats. Each planted shoot represents a step toward rebuilding ecosystems that sustain both marine life and coastal communities.

From the Sea Floor to the Spotlight
What began as a grassroots environmental effort has now reached a broader audience. The project’s journey—from the sea floor of Anilao to national television—has helped amplify awareness about the importance of seagrass conservation.

The initiative was proudly featured on TV5, further bringing attention to the importance of marine restoration efforts. Special thanks to Miss Luchi Cruz-Valdes, Miss Avelynn Garcia, Sir Guddy Hernandez, and of course, our very own Director for Public Image Rtn. Susan Co-Ong Delafuente, for helping bring our story to life and sharing it with the world.

This growing visibility highlights a powerful message: meaningful change does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it starts with small, purposeful actions carried out by committed individuals and organizations.
A Ripple Effect of Service
At its core, the Our Seagrass: Sea of Life Project embodies the spirit of service and sustainability. By mobilizing volunteers, raising awareness, and encouraging environmental stewardship, the Rotary Club of San Juan Del Monte continues to inspire others to take part in protecting the country’s natural resources.
The initiative also reflects a broader vision—one where communities understand their role in preserving the environment, and where collective action leads to long-term impact.

Planting Hope for the Future
As the project continues to grow, so does its impact. The restoration of seagrass beds is not just about protecting marine life—it is about safeguarding livelihoods, strengthening coastal resilience, and ensuring that future generations can still experience the richness of our oceans.
From the shores of Anilao to the national stage, the message is clear: even simple acts of service—like planting seagrass—can create waves of change.

Thank you so much to everyone who became part of this—our divers, especially SDI Dive Instructor Mikkel Dion Reyes for the underwater photos ????, our partners, and our volunteers who continue to give their unwavering support.
And in those waves, hope continues to grow.
