It was in 1962 when The Special Forces Regiment (Airborne), an elite Philippine Army unit was established. They recently celebrated their 53rd founding anniversary with the theme: “Professional, Competent and Reliable” at their headquarters at Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija.
During the anniversary program, former executive secretary and defense secretary Eduardo Ermita served as the guest of honor and speaker. The secretary is a product of Philippine Military Academy and graduated in 1957 then took the Special Forces Course in 1962–1963.
Also during the anniversary program, a video that describes what makes the Special Forces special was shown for the first time. Its introduction reads: “Soldiery is the noblest profession for we have to capital except our lives.”
The candidates for the Special Forces Combat Qualification Course undergo a dreary pre-selection process. After that, they may continue to two weeks of hellish physical and mental exercises in the Special Forces Assessment and Qualification System.
The candidates can only earn their rights to enter the eight-month Special Forces Operations Course once they’re able to endure sufferings during the pre-qualification process. During the eight-month course, they are expected to weather firm training that will drive their human capabilities to the limit in order to become well prepared in the art and science of unconventional warfare operations.
The members of the Special Forces are soldiers who are passionate and dedicated to perform the toughest military operations, honed to have the courage and determination to face challenges. They were taught to hold the extraordinary skills in conventional tactics, subversion, and guerrilla warfare to the highest level of professionalism.
This is the Army’s Special Forces. When extreme circumstances call for extreme methods, but no matter the threat, the Special Forces will be there to serve the people and secure the land.
