LG Electronics (LG) launched a global campaign dubbed as ‘Optimism your feed’ where it encourages proactively posting positive and inspiring content on social media.
According to LG, the campaign aims to create positive changes in people’s lives by being intentional with positive activities online and in the real world.
A global survey commissioned by LG found out that social media is both a source of anxiety and a place where people turn to be entertained, informed, and be connected with friends and family.
Forty-five percent of the survey respondents said that their social media feeds were filled with equal or greater amounts of negative content than positive content.
One in four respondents or 28 percent admitted that negative content on their social media feeds increased their anxiety, while one in five or 20 percent said it has made them unhappy.
LG collaborated with global influencers Tina Choi, Victoria Browne, Josh Harmon, and more who will curate their own ‘Optimism your feed’ playlist with over 20 short-form videos that promote motivation and feel-good content.
The brand also tapped social media experts including information scientist, technology ethicist, and Human Centered Computing PhD-holder Casey Fiesler.
Fiesler highlighted how LG’s campaigns can be a factor in recommendation algorithms.
“Recommendation algorithms determine what we see on social media by predicting what content we are likely to engage with. These algorithms can therefore send us down ever more specific niches – for good and for bad,” the expert said.
“One of our first lines of defense needs to be improving our digital literacy, and paying more attention to how algorithms influence our online experiences. And the good news is that we do have some control over the input for these algorithmic predictions; if we choose to engage with optimistic content, there’s a good possibility we will see more of it.”
