As the nation prepares for President Bongbong Marcos Jr.’s third State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 22, Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri underscores the critical topics he hopes the President will address, reflecting the most pressing concerns of Filipinos today.
“The country’s growth has been dampened by high inflation, a challenge that President Marcos must address if we are to achieve our goal of becoming an upper-middle-income economy by 2028,” said Zubiri.
Senator Zubiri is eager to hear the President’s plan for reducing inflation and the high cost of goods, particularly rice, to ensure that economic growth benefits every working-class Filipino. “I believe it is essential that the prosperity reflected in our GDP translates into tangible improvements in the daily lives of our people,” he emphasized.
Another key issue Zubiri wants the President to tackle is the daily wage increase for minimum wage earners, who are suffering the most from rising inflation. “The wage increases of late are not enough to help Filipinos cope with the rising prices of goods. We should pass the minimum wage law that the Senate has already acted upon on third reading and is languishing at the House of Representatives,” Zubiri stated. “Ultimately, the true measure of a country’s economic success is whether every family can afford to put food on their table. We urge the President to consider supporting the legislated wage hike bill.”
Food security also remains a priority amid global uncertainties. Senator Zubiri expects the President to outline a comprehensive strategy to boost local agricultural production, support farmers, and reduce reliance on imports.
Additionally, Zubiri calls for decisive action on the issue of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). “The industry has been plagued by criminal activities, and the social costs far outweigh the revenues. It is time for a clear policy on POGOs, whether it involves an immediate ban or a phased transition to other industries for affected workers,” he asserted.
Finally, as a senator and a former Senate President, Zubiri looks forward to the President’s legislative agenda. “We will consider and support the President’s legislative priorities as part of our six-member bloc in the Senate. Our goal is to work together for the welfare and prosperity of all Filipinos,” Zubiri concluded.
The upcoming SONA presents an opportunity for President Marcos to address these critical issues and outline a vision that ensures inclusive growth and development for the nation.
