Living in a very tech-driven world opens up a plethora of opportunities for families to connect, explore and help their children spark their creativity at a young age. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests that there should be zero screen time for children 2 years old and below.
Once children get permission to access gadgets for the first time, it helps for parents set clear rules on what to do and what not to share online. They can also rely on Google’s safety apps and tools to ensure that their kids are protected when they are online and help the whole family build good online safety habits.
Guide them to kid-friendly content
Parents must teach kids to make smart choices and guide them to access appropriate content online. With Google’s Family Link, they can approve or block apps that their child wants to download on the Google Play store, as well as receive teacher-recommended apps that they can download directly on their device.

Keep an eye on their screen time
The AAP recommends a maximum of two hours online for children aged 3 to 8 years old. Family Link lets parents set time limits and even a bedtime for their kid’s device so they can find a good balance with their digital usage. They can also choose to remotely lock their phones whenever a break is necessary.
Set a good example
Children see parents as their first role models, that’s why it’s also important for moms and dads to put down their phone from time to time. Google’s Digital Wellbeing can help manage their screen-time and unplug when needed, especially for some quality family time — away from screens!
For kids and teens, Google Family Link is available on Android devices running versions 5.0 Lollipop, 6.0 Marshmallow, and 7.0 Nougat or higher. Meanwhile, for parents, the app is available on Android devices running version 4.4 Kit Kat or higher. For more information about Family Link, visit https://families.google.com/familylink/.
